Become a Volunteer

Your time and talents are valuable.

Next Door volunteers are some of our greatest resources! Our children, families and staff appreciate your skills, dedication and kindness. We have plenty of opportunities for you to support our students directly in the classrooms and in our libraries. You can also support special events/projects and lend a hand preparing thousands of donated books that come in every year for our Books for Kids program. Volunteer support also helps raise valuable funds for Next Door. For every hour a volunteer logs at Next Door, we can access $22.24 in federal funding.

Read with Me

Enhance children’s literacy skills and support their love of books by reading one-on-one or to a small group of children in our library. Volunteers can participate as an individual or in a group at Next Door’s 29th Street and Capitol Drive locations. During the week, we offer volunteer reading sessions for children from infants to 2 years old and sessions for children from 3 to 5 years old. For more information, email  volunteer@nextdoormke.org.

Prepare books for kids

Even if you don’t wish to work with children directly, there are still ways to help shape their future. Volunteers are needed to support our Books for Kids program by helping us clean, sort and label thousands of donated children’s books we receive every year. You’re welcome to join us by yourself or with a group. With your support, we will get these books ready to distribute to Next Door students and children in Milwaukee and help them build their home libraries. For more information, email  volunteer@nextdoormke.org

Learn with Me

Volunteer as a classroom helper and assist teachers by engaging children in learning and nurturing activities, including teaching games, songs and play. Additional opportunities could include art, cooking and gardening experiences with students. With your support, you will help Next Door children develop critical academic and social skills and get them ready for school! For more information, email volunteer@nextdoormke.org

Next Door Accelerators

Support Next Door students by serving as a Next Door “Accelerator” and provide one-on-one tutoring for our K4 and K5 students. These volunteer tutors will serve in our classrooms Monday-Friday mornings at both Next Door campuses. You will work in partnership with teachers to provide individualized instruction to students in core areas of literacy, language and math, and help the children make up for lost learning time during the pandemic. We will provide the lessons, materials and guidance you will use to help the students build academic skills crucial for school success. For more information, email volunteer@nextdoormke.org.
