Become a Volunteer
Your time and talents are valuable.
Next Door volunteers are some of our greatest resources. Our children, families and staff appreciate your skills, dedication and kindness. We have plenty of opportunities for you to support our kids directly in the classrooms and the library. You can also help us with a book drive, or lend some time to sort and repair the thousands of donated books that come in every year.
If you’re not available to volunteer your time, but still wish to support Next Door, we also have many donation opportunities.
Read with Me
Enhance children’s literacy skills and support their love of books by reading one-on-one or to a small group of children ages 2 to 5. Individual or group opportunities: Tuesdays 9 am to 11 am and Wednesdays 9 am to 11 am at our 29th Street campus. Wednesdays 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, Thursdays 9 am to 11 am and Fridays 9 am to 11 am at our Capitol Drive location. Click here for a schedule of dates and a sign-up form.
Walk with Me
The Walk for Children is our premiere annual event with more than 1,000 participants that takes place each May. It’s a fun and easy way to support Next Door children and families. Volunteers play a key part in the event’s success and are needed for registration, set-up, break down, parking and children’s activities.
Cook with Me
Measure, count and make healthy and delicious treats in our Kids Kitchen. Using fresh ingredients when available, this is a fun, hands-on opportunity to engage with children and foster their interest in a valuable life skill.
Grow with Me
Plant, weed and watch the garden come to life with our Next Door students. Not only do our students learn the joys of gardening, but the plants they grow become ingredients for our Cook With Me programs.
Learn with Me
Assist teachers by engaging children in learning and nurturing activities, including teaching games, songs and play. These activities help build responsibility and social skills from a very early age.
Create with Me
Discover the world of art and theatre with our students as they get creative in exploring and expressing themselves. Helping children discover the power of their own imaginations can be one of Next Door’s most rewarding opportunities.
Assist in the “Giving Library”
Even if you don’t wish to work with children directly, there are ways to help shape their future. In the Giving Library, volunteers are needed to help us to clean, sort, label and shelve the thousands of children’s books so that they are ready for distribution.
Work one-on-one with adult learners on building basic reading comprehension, writing and math skills . This opportunity is available year-round.
Individuals and groups needed for mailings, painting, cleaning and other special events.
