We want to thank TMJ4 News and the Scripps Howard Foundation for supporting Next Door in the 2021 “If You Give a Child a Book” campaign! This national campaign works to get books into the hands of under-resourced children across the country to help them build home libraries and get critical exposure to literacy early on in life.

Locally, the campaign ran for two weeks back in September and raised funding for Next Door to purchase books for its Books for Kids program. Donations came in from station employees and community members at large. Stay tuned for the official results!

As part of the campaign, TMJ4 visited Next Door and covered a story about our literacy efforts for the current school year. We are enhancing these efforts as part of our overall work this fall to support our students’ transition back to 100% in-person learning.

Our new programming includes Next Door Accelerators, community volunteers working one-on-one with children in core areas like literacy. The story features one of our Accelerators, Arious Walton. Also interviewed is Next Door’s Director of Educational Services, Dr. Tonya Hameister.
