Local stations partner to support Books for Kids

In celebration of National Reading Day, three Milwaukee media outlets came to Next Door on January 23rd and delivered 2,687 new books for Next Door students. The donation will go to the Books for Kids program, which works to improve access to books for Central City children and help them build their home libraries.

This donation came from employees at the local E.W. Scripps stations – Today’s TMJ4, Newsradio 620 WTMJ and KTI Country. Last fall, they held a fundraising drive to help Next Door buy more books for the nearly 2,000 children the agency now serves. They chose Next Door as part of a literacy campaign called “Give a Child a Book,” run by their parent company’s foundation. The money raised for the books included a foundation match, bringing the total to $6,722.

What made this week’s delivery even more special was that volunteers from these stations spent time reading with our children in the Books for Kids library at our Capitol Drive location. It was a memorable morning for the children, Next Door staff and the generous volunteers from TMJ4, Newsradio 620 WTMJ and KTI Country. We are so grateful for this support!
