Today’s TMJ4 delivers new books and $10,000 surprise for Next Door

We had a special visit on National Reading Day – January 23, 2019 – from employees at the E.W. Scripps Company and its local news station, Today’s TMJ4.

They came to Next Door as part the company’s “If You Give a Child a Book” literacy campaign, which collects thousands of new books for children in need across the country.  Locally, the Scripps employees held a fundraiser to purchase more than 2,500 new books for Next Door’s Books for Kids program, which distributes books for free to Next Door students and children across the community to help them build their home libraries.

An even bigger surprise came next when the employees presented Next Door with a check for $10,000 from the Scripps Howard Foundation. This gift came via a grant Next Door applied for and will support Next Door’s early literacy programming, including Books for Kids.

While they were with us, the Scripps employees spent time reading to our students in the library and created some magical moments! They even brought along a special reading friend – Clifford The Big Red Dog!

It was an amazing morning and we are so grateful for this extraordinary support!
